Layne Carraway
Senior Layne Carraway has been selected as Greene Central's Student of the Week for the first week of September.
"Layne is a remarkable young man. He's one of the most intellectually curious students I've ever taught. I have thoroughly enjoyed having him in my classes because he truly enjoys learning,” said Academically/Intellectually Gifted Teacher Donald L. Clark
Carraway took four AP classes last year: AP Calculus, AP European History, AP English: Literature and Composition, and AP Environmental Science, and made a perfect score of 5 on all four of them.
"It's extremely difficult to take four AP classes in one year, but to take four AP classes, to make A's in all four of those classes, and to score a 5 on all four AP exams is just a remarkable achievement. Less than 10% of students who take AP classes make a 5 which makes Layne's accomplishment all the more remarkable,” said Donald Clark.
"I was very happy with my scores this year, needless to say surprised, and hope it all pays off at some point," said Carraway.
He attended Governor's School West this past summer at Salem College in Winston-Salem.
"I think Governor's School was a great experience because I definitely didn't waste my time. I liked the type of learning environment and really enjoyed the orchestra concerts," said Carraway.
He continues to take a demanding schedule as a senior which includes Spanish I, Honors English 12, AP World History, and AP Physics.
"Layne truly enjoys academic challenge. He is not cowered by material or concepts that are new to him. I believe that the sky is the limit for this young man if he continues to apply himself as he has done in high school,” said Donald Clark.
Carraway is a member of the men’s tennis team at Greene Central High School. He also participates in Political Science Club, Book Club, and Hispanic Culture Club.
"I'm glad I got this far and I'm pretty excited to do something else after I graduate, whatever that may be. Depending on which college, I want to double major in History and either International Security or Peace, War, and Defense,” said Carraway.
He is the son of Lonnie and Cheryl Carraway of Snow Hill.
